The Token System

Once you have decided on the behaviors that you would like to modify you can customise the rewards based on things that are meaningful to your child. It is important to include your child in this decision making process. I like to use my rewards for things I wish I did more often with the kids like having a tea party. Try to make the rewards more time based than objects that cost money.
You have the flexibility to choose rewards that you approve of and would like your child to do more of, such as; if your child watches a lot of tv then you can make extra tv time expensive while playing ball with mom can cost less. Discuss which rewards can occur quickly and which ones need to be scheduled. A trip to the park will not be able to be redeemed at 7:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for your child to be able to tell you how they would like to spend their time with you.

I recommend that you start with one behavior that you would like to address. Decide exactly what you want from your child. For example: What does getting ready for school or bed look like? What does getting your homework done look like? You need to decide how they will earn their tokens and how they will be taken away. Now have a family meeting to introduce the system to your family.

Once you have agreed on the rewards, use The Token System's I Did It cards to keep track of what each reward will cost. Place the card in the proper slot, if it takes 3 tokens to earn a privilege place the card in the 3rd pocket. This allows your child to see how close he is to receiving a reward. You will also notice that your Token System kit comes with a token that has a 10 on one side and a 20 on the other side; this is so that you can set some rewards up to 29 tokens without having a huge heavy pocket on your refrigerator. When your child fills the pocket then use the 10 token as a place holder and your child can continue to earn tokens. Remember to always have rewards that are attainable.

All human beings regardless of age are motivated by what they can earn in life. The lesson that we want to teach our children is that hard work pays off. There has been a tremendous transition from previous generations that we, as parents, have failed to require our children to complete what is required of them to get what they want.

Instead of purchasing material rewards for your children, The Token System wants you to spend your time and your energy with your children. Let your children pick the rewards and they will tell you exactly what kind of energy they want from you.

My sons's favorite reward is getting to go to the Home Depot for 8 tokens. We go when dad is home and can watch the other kids. He gets to wander the isles for 30 minutes. It doesn't cost me anything! Most of the time he doesn't want to buy anything or he brings his allowance.

My daughter loves to play Racheal Ray for 3 tokens. (I have to make dinner anyway!) We talk as if we are on tv and explain the process of cooking the meal.

Purchase the Token System and watch your family settle down and get into a rythm. You have an immediate consequence to each action! Children as young as 3 years of age can learn how The Token System works!
